With the endless amount of content available to view on network, subscription and streaming channels in addition to high consumption of news to stay woke, it is rare for a comedy to make a big splash with me these days. But the tale of the Roses’ packing up Moira’s wigs and monochromatic wardrobe and becoming a family in the connecting rooms of a motel has stolen my heart. Even Michelle Obama recently told Oprah she watches this show which honestly felt like the biggest vindication of my taste in television.
Part of why I think this show is so successful lies in the work of the actors. They all play characters that portrayed differently could either read as flat or caricatures. However, they bring such humanity to the often-silly scenarios they play which adds so much dimension. To embrace the show in the way I have requires letting go of wanting everything to be potentially plausible. But since weddings, and especially gay ones, are my thing, I’m following this part of the story very closely. So, if you are a devoted fan like me, planning your own wedding or both, here’s a few pointers I would be sharing with David and Patrick if they contacted me.
PRO TIP 1: The Venue
The season begins with touring the potential wedding venue of Clive Elmbridge Manor. After greeting everyone with champagne, the manager assumes Patrick and Stevie are the engaged couple. I always encourage setting up your vendors for success by sharing pertinent details in advance such as names, genders and preferred pronouns. After falling in love with the venue, the sticker shock of the cost hits like a thud. You should always get pricing in advance to make sure you’re only considering items that are affordable.
PRO TIP 2: The Date
The venue then offers a discount if they agree to get married in a month on a Sunday afternoon. While pulling off a wedding in four weeks is possible, I would always recommend giving yourself more time to avoid making hasty decisions. But more importantly, this means that David’s sister Alexis won’t be able to attend. If there’s anyone that you absolutely must have at your wedding, such as immediate family, you should always check with their availability. Finally, it’s revealed why the discount was being offered. Once a month the pork is processed from the local pigs on the farm. Whenever you’re being offered a lower price, it’s important to fully understand why and see how that could impact your guests. Venues aren’t always forthcoming if there might be potential construction or traffic closures, but it’s important you’re aware of anything that could impact you and your guests’ experience.
PRO TIP 3: The Mood Board
In a later episode, Alexis discovers David’s Wedding Dream Book. This is actually a tool I would suggest doing. Whether yours is online on a site like Pinterest or a physical copy like David created, store images and ideas that excite you!
PRO TIP 4: The Wedding Party
As David is about to take Patrick for a suit fitting, Alexis learns her brother has already asked Stevie to be the maid of honor. Even though David did this assuming his sister would be out of town, it illuminates how these big decisions require proper consideration. It’s much more challenging to uninvite someone or take away an honor than it is to be patiently considerate.
PRO TIP 5: The Outfit
As they are shopping for Patrick’s suit, David seeks feedback on his tie choice from both Alexis and Stevie. While I do believe second opinions are helpful, they can also create overwhelm. Not all friends and family are the right person to assist you with fashion decisions. Choose wisely with who accompanies you.
PRO TIP 6: YOUR Day
The episode concludes with quite possibly my favorite lesson taught to anyone getting married. Even though Johnny & Moira Rose are both excited, accepting and likely figuring out which wig will attend the wedding, David asks Alexis to give him away. Reinventing traditions at any wedding is an act of personalization that ensures your wedding will be exclusively yours.
If you like observing the upcoming wedding of David and Patrick as much as fruit wine stay tuned for more!
